León Henrique Cottin Nunez admitted as member of the Academia de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de Venezuela
Established in 1915, the Academia de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de Venezuela consists of 35 well-reputed jurists from Venezuela. The objective of the institution is to promote the development and progress of political and social sciences in general. Its members are elected among Venezuela’s most renowned jurists who meet the specific requirements outlined in the Law on the Academy of Political and Social Sciences.
For decades, Caracas lawyers lacked a union centre. After many deliberations about this situation, a group of them founded what was called the “Academy of Jurisprudence” in 1841. Its mission was to elucidate matters and questions of law for the instruction of its members, contribute to the progress of jurisprudence in the country, and improve the image of the legal profession. The Academy of Jurisprudence, however, disappeared due to lack of capital and government support, remaining only as a precedent for the current Academy of Political and Social Sciences, which was inaugurated in the Auditorium of the Palace of the Academies in 1876.
Its current headquarters are in the old campus of the Central University of Venezuela, in the Palacio de las Academias, in Caracas.
León Henrique Cottin Nunez joined Viso, Rodríguez, Cottin, Medina, Ramírez y Asociados in 1971. He graduated from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (1970), as a lawyer, cum laude, and received the UCAB Alumni Association Award, as the best student graduated during that year. He has followed several specialisation courses in tax and procedural matters, including a Specialist Degree in Financial Law, Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (2006) summa cum laude. He has combined his professional practice with extensive academic activity and the performance was been professor of Obligations, Roman Law I and II, and Evidence at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello from 1970 to 2018, serving as Head of the Obligations Department since 1978. He was also professor of Commercial Law at the Universidad Central de Venezuela from 1979 to 1984. Angel Viso, Partner with Viso, Rodríguez, Cottin, Medina, Ramírez y Asociados, comments on the achievement: “We are very proud of the incorporation of our partner as a member of the Academia de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de Venezuela. It is a great achievement for him and for our firm, which is the product of his constant work and effort during so many years. He has combined his academic work as an excellent professor of several generations of lawyers with a very successful practice as a lawyer. Of course, this incorporation is an individual one and is the product of the hard work of León Henrique Cottin Nuñez, but we cannot avoid thinking that it is also an achievement of our firm, since he has been a partner of our firm for so many years.”
